Susan Brougher –
South of France and perfume
This was an entertaining story with a variety of characters and a degree of suspense. I especially appreciated the deepening relationship between Iris, the young Englishwoman, and Hammond Brooke the perfumer. Irisâs internal conflict over loyalty to the perfumer, who was a difficult man to work for, was palpable. Just how could she perform her secretarial role surrounded by continual interference from unusual people as she attempted to settle in at the Villa? Having a background in Aromatherapy and being a lover of perfume scents I was interested in a story to immerse me in perfuming, perfumes, and a South of France setting. This did a pretty good job of that. I found it difficult to follow at times with the shifts between past and present but I liked the historical backdrop. It played out well in spite of this distraction, and was an enjoyable not easily predicable read.

French Perfumer
I enjoyed the Olive Sisters more than the Perfumer – maybe because that was my first Amanda H read. The Perfumer is cleverly written, and actually has more scientific and knowledgeable facts than Olive Sisters. The plot twists came as surprises, and kept on coming till the end.

A great holiday read to escape into another world and time
Delightful! The French Perfumer is a special treat, reminiscent to licking cotton candy threads from sticky fingers on a sultry summer day. Or, perhaps comparable to sipping limoncello from a sugar dusted shot glass in a warm seaside breeze, as a glowing sun sinks into the Mediterranean. Then again, it might be likened to the delirious bliss of nodding off, flopped on a secluded white sand beach while the midday rays gently melt your back. This evocative read with a boisterous cast of interesting characters, takes a number of unsuspecting twists and turns. A great holiday read to escape into another world and time! If you are a Francophile like me, you will find this book particularly authentic and enjoyable! It was a daily pleasure for me ~ I almost did not want to finish reading it! Bon voyage! (p.s. My husband loved it as well!)

Adventure, the French countryside and intrigue – A fun story with wit and developed characters

I’ve enjoyed several of Amanda Hampson’s books but this one is my favorite! Twisting plot, likeable and not-so-likeable characters, a bit of speculative(?) fiction and… it takes place in France. Love it!

Parts of this story were gripping and very atmospheric, others were shallow and quickly passed over and thus not convincing. Altogether an enjoyable holiday read but not a memorable one.

What an absolute masterpiece. So far from my normal literature. I simply loved every page. Beautifully written. I have just read the final page and am possibly still a little overwhelmed by its content. It is a book for all ages. It joins the ranks of other great writers like Jane Austen. Enjoy 5 stars from me
